PLAN E worked as part of an interdisciplinary team to prepare a detailed Master Plan and Development Guidelines for the Northbridge Link Project including the area bounded by Wellington Street, Roe Street, The Mitchell Freeway and Horseshoe Bridge. Master planning was followed by the implementation of stage 1 & 2 of the works which included Bridge Plaza to the west and Wellington Street.
A coordinated response to and integration of rail, bus, pedestrian, cycle and vehicular movement systems throughout the precinct was a key consideration in the planning and design of the external spaces.
The redevelopment of Wellington Street into an urban boulevard provides a variety of visual opportunities and experiences, with designated cycle way, defined pedestrian crossing points, tactile paving, planted nibs, and defined parking bays to assist in the creation of a highly pedestrian orientated environment.
Street tree selection provides shade and reflect the existing street character while referencing the natural heritage of the site. The use of upper canopy trees with low shrubs and groundcovers ensures that sight visibility and pedestrian safety is maintained.
