This simple, elegant and contemporary memorial designed by PLAN E marks the 100th anniversary of the first planting of the memorial avenue trees in Kings Park in 1919 to commemorate the lives of the fallen from World War 1. Since then, memorial plantings have continued to encompass all conflicts in which West Australians have lost their lives, and are one of the defining features of Kings Park.
The design inspiration for the memorial is drawn from the World War 1 Gallipoli campaign. The long, serpentine cast concrete seats defining the memorial space echo the coastline of Turkey from Suvla Bay through to Anzac Cove. The sculptural steel centrepiece represents the prow of a ship approaching the shore, with the unfolding form inspired by the opening of letters sent home by the soldiers, suggesting freedom and escape.
We acknowledge and respect Traditional Owners across Australia as the original custodians of our land and waters, their unique ability to care for country and deep spiritual connection to it. We honour Elders past, present and emerging whose knowledge and wisdom has and will ensure the continuation of cultures and traditional practices.
